Eggplants continue to be in season and I bought three different kinds to continue my eggplant comparisons. This week its Italian, Blanca Rosa, and the person at the stall didn’t know the name for the small purples ones.
I came across a breed of beautifully striped heirloom tomatoes I’ve never tried before. I got lovely ripe red ones that are so soft they will burst soon and hard green unripened ones. (Is this what fried green tomatoes are made from?)
White peaches made a sudden appearance, must be from late blooming trees! My son was extremely happy with that discovery. Asian pears have arrived.
I bought some tarragon which I have no idea what I would do with and Thai Basil leaves for Roy Choi’s Twice Fried Duck Fat Fries. That’s what the orange sweet potatoes are for. The recipe calls for “Idaho potatoes” which I took to mean russet. (Turned out its more complicated than that.)
I couldn’t find russet potatoes in the market although there were yukon golds in a number of stalls. Are russets not grown in California? Yuca Root is also in the recipe, should have been at the market but I forgot to look. I might have to go to the nearby latino neighborhood to find some. I know they are cheap, but I don’t remember seeing them in the supermarkets where I live. I’ve never cooked with them before, so maybe I never noticed.
Found some purple bell peppers. I love the taste of purple food, carrots, string beans, and eggplants of course!
Also bought some gala apples, cucumber, garlic, sprouted peas and sprouted goose berries, then the staples: Cashew Yogurt, Salad, and mix pack berries.
I wonder if a single person would ever read my weekly farmer’s market discoveries. Probably not. But it makes me so happy to write it up.
